I'VE GOT MAIL

The packages are starting to arrive! It's fun getting mail these days. I've mentioned I am part of a scrappy block swap, and September is my month to get blocks made for me. I asked for scrappy x and + blocks, with an emphasis on orange and teal.

So far I've received 5 blocks (one is mine) The blocks have come from Sweden, the UK and the states.

 I also won some fat quarters from Dhia. These will come in handy for sure : )

A little peek at my "ticker tape" quilt.

I have to show you my latest treasure. I found this on Friday at our local thrift shop. My other change table was ok, but I couldn't leave this there. $39 ----------- love it.

SEPTEMBER MODA CLUB RECAP

This past Saturday, we had our first 'Moda and More' meeting for fall. The following are pictures of the show and tell the ladies brought.

 (don't mind the orange and green bits on my quilt. I was using it as a demo wall )

We have quilters ranging from 18 to 90+   It was a gorgeous display of talent. Thanks to all of you for making our first meeting a success.

MR. MEMPHIS

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine had her fifth grandchild. Her son and his wife had a little boy and they named him Memphis.  Isn't that the best name ever?  I had been playing around with piecing some letters, so as soon as I heard the name, the idea for this quilt popped into my head.


This is for the little man.......

It started with some random pieced blocks made from scraps I had.  Then came the letters, and I thought I should add the year too.  I threw in a few bits on the right to sort of balance it out.

This photo really shows the quilting.  It's an allover geometric type stipple. It's new to me, and much easier than traditional stippling.  With this design, it's okay to cross over your lines!

I tried to make it big enough so Mommy could fit under it too during those late night feedings.  Where they live, it's cold .

The backing is rows and rows of little toy soldiers and trees.

This is everything I had imagined, and more. I am so pleased with how it turned out : )

Now just to contact his Gramma, and send it off.

A PEEK

This is just a peek at a baby quilt I am working on. I started with this little stack from my stash.....

...but I ran out of thread near the end of the quilting, so it will have to wait until Sunday now for me to finish it.

week #37 hexagon

It's supposed to be 30* celcius this week-end.  Hurray for a loooooong summer!

IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE .....

...........I can't say it.

I love the heat. I don't want it to be fall or winter or anything.  I do however, love Blitzen, this years Christmas line by Basic Grey for Moda. So very lovely.

This is what I made this summer.  I called it Blitzen Squared.

Isn't the quilting great? Linda quilted it for me. I wanted texture, so she did giant poinsettias all over to mimic the border print.
I love it.

The other day when my daughter-in-law was over, she said she really liked it. Perhaps that's one Christmas gift taken care of.

FRIDAY PHOTOS

Thanks for all the nice comments on my last post. I have the quilt hanging on the side of the crib, and I have to smile whenever I glance in the room.  Simple pleasures : )

This week, I have been playing with more words. You can probably guess where this is headed......

VINTAGE RESCUE

I just put the final stitches in the binding of this little quilt.  The following pictures are of the steps of this restoration.

Demolition day :

This is what I found

I was shocked at the mess inside (mind you it's about 49ish years old, and tied)

 The blocks cut apart and sashing decided on

Sewn back together and looking all freshened up

Some simple quilting and a turquoise binding. I tried numerous fabrics for a border but nothing seemed to work. Everything looked too "new". As my daughter put it, they all looked too 2012!
So, I decided to just leave it as is which made it long and narrow, but it fits the crib perfectly : )

The whole point of restoring this, was to try to prolong the life of this little quilty for perhaps another 50 or so years.

Looking at the finished result, I'm glad I took the time.

DECISIONS

There's no going back now. I have the little embroidery quilt all cut apart.  As it turns out, by the time I cut away the holes and stains, the blocks ended up 6 1/2" x 10 1/2".


At first, I had some 30's reproduction picked out, but then I found my roll of solids, and decided this looked better.

The 30's seemed to compete too much or something.  Maybe once I get piecing,this will prove to be too much as well.

Lastly, thanks to everyone who voted for my hexagon quilt. It came in second!  I now have a bit of play money for the Fat Quarter Shop.
