LOW VOLUME PICNIC--TAKE 2

I was quite happy with my first picnic quilt I made last week,  but then I washed it. I was trying to soften it up a bit before sending it off to it's new home. I think I gasped out loud when I took it out of the dryer.  It sort of looked like a kleenex that got left in a pocket.  It had shrunk 4" in both directions--4 !

Now I'm all for a crinkly quilt, but this was a bit much. How could I give THAT away?

So...........I made another one. It's not like I had put the fabrics away or anything   : )
I placed all the prints in pretty much the same place (except one I ran out of) so it looks the same. This one I quilted with straight lines in both directions.

The back got a nice grey stripe

When I took it out of the dryer, it still laid nice and flat and was only slightly crinkled.  I feel much better sending this one off.

Right now it's making it's way to a new home. Here's hoping that soon it has peanut butter and jam on it and all those other good things that go along with a picnic  : )

Happy Sunday

It's lovely! So was it the FMQ that made it crinkle so much??

Beautiful Low Volume Carla! I love that you just whipped up another in a week! Inspiring!

Wish I could see in person - the 2nd looks less crinkly but also less densely quilted so why the difference?? Glad you are happier with #2 tho...

Both are lovely! Must have been a shock though. What will happen to no 1 though?

I'll never wash anything....grin...what made the difference?

Both are great quilts! But why all the shrinkage? Very puzzling!

Was it the batting, or the backing fabric that made it shrink so much? I still think it looked pretty cool!

Me thinks that the crinkly quilt just wanted to stay and enjoy a picnic or two with you. The second one is lovely....thank goodness that it behaved when washed and dried!!

Both quilts are lovely...and at the end of the day usable...sometimes we encounter shrinkage that was not expected...at least you had enough to make another one....although I would be greatly pleased with the crinkly first one...

The first one still looks good to me. Pretty, and still functional.

how strange, but it looks really snugly

I think they both look nice. Funny how one shrunk so much though...

I'm sure they would of loved the first one, but...... They both look great. Do you ever sleep?

My swoon quilt did the same thing...I wonder why? I love the crinkly look. Both are just delicious.

I wonder if it was the kind of fabrics you used? Where they loosely woven cottons, or gauze fabrics? I'm sure both quilts would have been snugly, whatever their size. Very productive to make two--wow!

Wow! I wonder why that happened! I like the low volume look!

The second quilt is gorgeous as well.

Did you use a different batting for the first low-volume picnic quilt?

Diane-crewe said...

oh dear! but .. then you get to keep the first one xx

So the obvious questions are... Did you prewash your fabrics? What batting did you use on the first go-round? Was the batting different on the second one? I'm anxious to know!

Oh no! But, but, the first one is STILL lovely and would surely have been loved, crinkles and all. I just know it.

Your skill and determination are most remarkable! The Take 2 is gorgeous as well. Wow!!!!!

That's a huge amount of shrinkage! Yikes! However, it did give you the excuse to make another-win! Both are fantastic!

I think both quilts are beautiful but I am HUGE fan of a heavly crinkly quilt. It's what I grew up with so it's just looks inviting to me!

Carla,
Both quilts are wonderful. The first one has a vintage feel and the second one feels more modern.

4"! that is very interesting. have you figured out why? it seems a lot of would like to know why it shrunk so much.

Both quilts are beautiful, Carla. I can't believe you made a second one, I am impressed. Did you use different batting?

They are both really pretty! I'm a minimalist quilter myself, the less the better.
Bonus points for making a second one. You have to feel good about what you make or it just doesn't sit right. Love all the low volume fabrics.

Makes me want to lay down and take a nap. Lovely.

I'm with everyone else, what do you think caused the excess shinkage?
