BLOGGERS QUILT FESTIVAL 2015

Fall is here, and along with that comes Quilt Market, and along with THAT comes the Bloggers Quilt Festival hosted by Amy Ellis of Amy's Creative Side.  This is a virtual Quilt show and always inspires me.

This time around I am entering the quilt I made for my son's wedding this past spring.

I loved making this quilt.  I had a Moda jellyroll of Persimmon and the blocks used every bit of the strip.  I saw the 'anvil' block on a Navajo blanket and made my own version for this quilt.  The arrows added to the western theme plus made a nice border to hang down the edge of the bed.

I personalized it with their initials.

The quilt was a hit and is being used now that the chilly weather is here.

A SIGNATURE QUILT TOP

With a little over a week to spare, I got the signature quilt top done. This morning was windy, so I had to tuck myself in by the garage to get a couple of pictures.  I'll take what I can get : )

In the last post I was trying to figure out how I could get some purple into the quilt. I'm using fabrics that match the bridesmaids dresses.  I bought two pieces but then found this in my stash.
It was perfect!

The wedding quilt was definitely more 'their' colours, but this one is all about the bride. It turned out so pretty!

My plan is to iron freezer paper onto the back of the quilt to stabilize it for signing. After the wedding, I will quilt it.  I want to be able to replace a block incase that 'weird uncle' signs something he shouldn't  : )

After trimming all those corners, I ended up with a big stack of triangles.  These will be stitched up into a quilt for a baby that is sure to result from this happy union.  The bride has said so on several occasions!   It's only right that I'm ready........

THE WEDDING QUILT

Don't tell Becca, but the quilt is done! I'm very happy with how this turned out.  It's pretty exciting to have the vision of this quilt in my head become a reality.

Hubby and I went out for some pictures to a little western town that is about half an hour from home. Even though it was closed for the season, there was a truck there with music blaring.  No one seemed to be around, but I had the feeling we were being watched.  Hubby said  "seeing we are here, throw it on the wagon and get a couple shots."  I felt like such an 'outlaw'!

After a couple of pics, we took off and found another spot to stretch it out. This one really shows the colours well.

Becca and I designed this little 'brand' with their initials.   I. Love. It.

The all over hearts were the perfect texture for a wedding quilt and was done by the very talented Linda. Thank you so much Linda for making this quilt extra special

FRIDAY PHOTOS

All the blocks are done for the wedding quilt.

Now I start the task of cutting up yardage for sashing. The plan is to make the 20 blocks cover the top of the queen mattress and the arrows will hang down around the edges. That's the plan anyways.
And, I'm still toying with the idea of something between the bottom two arrows.........

These are bits left over from previous arrow blocks made by me or for me.  I'm thinking they will make some fun wonky blocks for a small quilt of some sort.

The bride to be and I are making jam this weekend as wedding favours.  Things are coming together bit by bit.  Now just to get this quilt finished!

PROGRESS REPORT

The wedding will be here before we know it!  My plan for the wedding quilt is coming together quite nicely

I drew up a bit of a layout the other day to help me with yardage etc.  The colours in this Persimmon line seem to work for both my son and his bride to be.  Not too girly yet there is something going on with each print.  

We discussed some arrows around the outside to make it bigger without me having to make a bazillion of these blocks....

( as a side note--I see people pinning the arrow tutorial all the time so I checked my stats and that page has been viewed 8449 times. Wow. )

So this is it so far.  The anvil blocks will be 4 x 5 rows with arrows on three sides. I'm also toying with the idea of their initials between the two bottom arrows but we'll see if I can pull it off.....

I'm excited to be closing in on a finish

OH WHAT FUN !

It's that time again to list the projects I would like to get finished this quarter. There are actually two that MUST get finished as they are for the wedding  : )

This year the host is Adrianne from On The Windy Side    It's always fun to challenge myself to see if I can actually finish what's on the list

1. The Wedding Quilt -- these blocks take a while to piece but I really like them and so does the bride to be so.......

2.  A Signature Quilt also for the wedding

3.  The New Hexagon Millefiori Quilt Along.   I won't get this done but I really want to keep up each month

4.  Scrap Vomit  --   to keep plugging away and get this done

5.  Socks -- this years were a hit so I am getting a jump on next Christmas' stocking stuffers  : )

2 NEW STARTS

He did it!  He popped the question, and she said yes  : )  We're going to have us a spring wedding.
Because the bride to be is somewhat of a cowgirl, I decided the wedding quilt had to be something sort of southwestern and not too girly for my boy.

The girl loves purple, so I have added in a plumb fabric from my stash to go along with the jellyroll I am using for this quilt

I'm using the easy angle ruler to cut the half square triangles for this block and there is NO room for error.  I get exactly the amount of triangles and rectangles I need for 1 block from each strip without a mm to spare.

My camera has become my new best friend. I didn't notice the top two pieces were facing the wrong way until I viewed it through the lens. This is how it should look

 I don't have a pattern for this so I'm making it up as I go along

The other day she came to me with a request.  She had seen a signature quilt on Pinterest and was wondering if she might be able to have one at their wedding.  Sure!  : )  She came shopping in my stash and picked this bundle

It matches her bouquet quite nicely which she also saw on pinterest

.......and so it begins

It's all so exciting and a welcome distraction at the end of a very difficult year.

A FINISHED WEDDING QUILT

The other day I sewed binding until my fingers bled, and with a few weeks to spare,  got the wedding quilt done           : )

I had Linda quilt it and asked her for something "windy".  Look at all that fabulous texture!

While pondering what I was going to do for a gift bag, I was thinking of making something that matched.  The future bride loves burlap so I figured I could try sewing a burlap sack.

I lined it with a reddish brown fabric that I think is very close to her wedding colours, and added a few silk leaves.

I'm quite pleased with it all. The other day I overheard her say she had changed her mind on the satin runners she was going to use on the tables and instead bought some burlap. I think I just may have nailed it!

Neither one of them know I have a blog, so chances of them seeing this are slim. Shhhhh

MODERN MAPLES--A FINISH

Don't you just love long week-ends?  On one of those days my hubby worked, and the kids were out so I had the place to myself.  I was able to lay my blocks out on the floor and sew until I had the top together.

It was fun setting the blocks every which way

I sewed the leaf blocks and plain blocks together into giant 9-patch and 4-patches. Some blocks needed to be sashed because they were made smaller. It was a bit like sewing a puzzle together .
I love that little one in the middle   : )

My plan was to have the leaves appear to be floating down from one corner to the other. I think the wide border helped them appear more 'airy'

The fact that hubby and my daughter were both home early Monday morning resulted in a photo shoot!
They each earned an ice cap.

I am passing this one onto my Long Arm Quilter who will work her magic and give this a personality all it's own. In the meantime, I have an awful lot of binding to make. More pics when it's done.

THE WEDDING QUILT

Today is the day.  I started the Wedding Quilt. The bride to be just loves fall colours so the first thing that popped into my head was a Modern Maples quilt. This way, I can include all her favourites.

I looked a few places for a background fabric that would be suitable. Now I would have loved a light fabric with text print all over to make it modern, but this quilt isn't about me. So, I decided on this one because I think what it says is so fitting for the Newlyweds. It's called 'Home to Roost' for Red Rooster fabrics.

 This piece is my inspiration fabric and I have started dumping out bins and baskets looking for fall colours.
